Discussions about the European Union at UKF in Nitra

The goal of the project “Slovakia discusses the EU” initiated by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic is to renew a wide social discussion about current issues related to the European Union with particular emphasis on its future and the position of Slovakia in it. On 2nd October 2017 the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Education organized another discussion at UKF in Nitra under the auspice of State Secretary Ivan Korčok whose guests were prime minister Robert Fico and representatives of the National Council of the Slovak Republic: Jaroslav Paška (SNS), Maroš Kondrót (SMER), Martin Klus (SaS), and Jozef Viskupič (Oľano).
“In the current geopolitical and domestic political situation is crucial to speak about pros and cons of the EU. Particularly, the visions of this community of countries and also obstacles that we will have to overcome together, and membership benefits for Slovakia, a small and still young country. The youth and students must learn more about the advantages of the EU membership and opportunities this unique project offers. I confide in young people, whose opinions and attitudes will shape the future of Slovakia and the whole EU. Therefore, I believe it necessary for them to present their views, reflections or their own visions at forums similar to this one, and most importantly not to be afraid to talk about them. A discussion is the best way to reach conclusions that will be acceptable to the general public,” stated UKF rector Prof. Ľubomír Zelenický.
Three students from the Department of Political Science and Eurasian Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the UKF in Nitra participated in the panel discussion: Patrik Kristlík (Migration Crisis and its Solutions), Matúš Dirnfeld (Brexit), and Michal Valenčík (The Core of the EU – Subjective Understanding). The follow-up inspiring discussion and questions from the audience demonstrated that the students and people from academia have constructive opinions of about the European affairs.
