Modern European University message in the footsteps of Constantine the Philosopher.

New AgroBioTech Research Centre open

At the premises of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra the new AgroBioTech Research Centre was inaugurated on 15th October 2015. Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra and the Institute of Plant Genetics and Biotechnology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences implemented joint project “Building of the AgroBioTech Research Centre” during the period from 2013 to 2015. The project was co-financed from the EU Structural Funds under the Operational Programme Research and Development, state budget and own resources of participating universities, and enabled to perform successful reconstruction of two pavilions within the premises of Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra in the total area of 5 800 m². These pavilions represent the core part of the Research Centre which includes 25 specialized laboratories, three integral laboratories and one food incubator. The new Research Centre was inaugurated by Dr.h.c. prof. Ing. Peter Bielik, PhD., Rector of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. Many prominent guests and representatives of various Slovak institutions participated in the opening ceremony such as Ľubomír Jahnátek, Minister of Agriculture, Vladimír Kováčik, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, prof. RNDr. Ľubomír Zelenický, CSc., Rector of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, doc. RNDr. Ján Salaj, DrSc., Director of the Institute of Plant Genetics and Biotechnology,  Milan Belica, Chairman of Nitra Self-Governing Region, Joseph Dvonč, Mayor of Nitra, Mons. Viliam Judák, Bishop of Nitra, as well as other significant representatives of political and social life, representatives of Slovak and foreign universities, institutions of practice and faculty representatives.
As pointed out in the speech of prof. RNDr. Ľubomír Zelenický, CSc., Rector of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, the purpose of this project was to build and provide scientists and teachers from both Nitra universities and the Slovak Academy of Sciences with fully equipped laboratories that are essential for modern primary research. Total expenditures of the project, involving the participation of our university, were in the sum of 3 368 661, 63 EUR and costs of 25 devices purchased within the project were 3 123 478, 80 EUR.  Our university conducts research in five research laboratories disposing with the latest technology equipment: Molecular Biology Laboratory, Embryo technological Laboratory, Physiological Laboratory, Biochemical Laboratory and Laboratory of Stress Biology. "I have to mention the contribution of our specialists within Physiological-analytical Laboratory which was awarded the internationally accepted Certificate of Analyses Quality Control in the German External Quality Assessment Scheme for toxicological analyses in biological materials," said Zelenický. The opening ceremony involved visits of laboratories followed by scientific programme in the afternoon when participants could join lectures held in the Research Centre Congress Hall.
