UKF's students translated about Ireland

Cooperation between the Embassy of Ireland in Slovakia and the Department of Translation Studies at UKF Nitra gets underway thanks to the thriving relations between these institutions. After translating a booklet for the Strangers to Citizens exhibition, subtitles for an Irish film and co-organizing Mladý prekladateľ 2019 competition, they collaborated on another project.
The Embassy asked the Department to translate a larger volume of texts (from English into Slovak) for readers of the daily Hospodárske noviny. These texts covered general information about Ireland, information about interesting cities and places to go, Ireland´s history, culture and festivals, films shot on location in Ireland, Irish cuisine, climate, sports (mainly golf), the Atlantic Road, and popular fishing.

The project was successfully coordinated by prof. Gromová, Assoc. Prof. Munková and Dr. Welnitzová. Approximately 20 students from the 1st and 2nd years of the Master's Translation programme participated. The students could show their translation aptitude and skills in a real translation project. Due to the volume of the translation and complexity of the task itself, the translation and revision work took more than one month.
The translators discussed translation issues with their project managers, and the managers attempted to find the most adequate solutions and to ensure the uniformity of all translations. The first proofreadings were conducted by the project managers, the second by Dr. Welnitzová, who was responsible for the accuracy and fluency of the whole translation. Afterwards, they submitted the translations to the Embassy of Ireland.
The translated tourist texts were a part of a newspaper supplement in Hospodárske noviny, published on March 17, 2020, on the occasion of St Patrick's Day, the patron saint of Ireland.
The Ambassador of Ireland, H.E. Hilda Ó Riain, expressed her gratitude to our students and staff in the editorial. She wanted to thank them personally at a reception held on March 17, 2020, in the Carlton Hotel, Bratislava. The event was sadly eventually postponed in line with the advice of the Slovak government concerning large gatherings due to COVID-19.
