Mathematics Education in Digital Age hosted in Nitra

In the last days before the start of the lecture period, 7-9 September 2022, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Informatics of the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia hosted the thirteenth ERME Topic Conference 13 (ETC13) entitled MEDA 3 Mathematics Education in the Digital Age. The MEDA3 conference follows the MEDA conferences organized at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2018 and Linz School of Education, Johannes Kepler University, Austria in 2020.
Since 2016, the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (ERME) has supported conferences focusing on specific areas in mathematics education. At its on-line meeting on 25 January 2022, the ERME Board approved support for three conferences to be held in 2022, including MEDA3.
The chair of the international program committee is Hans-Georg Weigand (Germany) and the co-chairs are Ana Donevska-Todorova (Germany/Macedonia), Eleonora Faggiano (Italy), Paola Iannone (UK), Michal Tabach (Israel), Melih Turgut (Norway/Turkey). Other members are Andreas Eichler (Germany), Ghislaine Gueudet (France), Gülay Bozkurt (Turkey), Alison Clark-Wilson (UK), Janka Medová (Slovakia), Morten Misfeldt (Denmark) and Jana Trgalová (France). The local organising committee consisting of Veronika Bočková, Kitti Páleníková, Gabriela Pavlovičová, Ľubomíra Valovičová, Silvia Haringová and Katarína Laššová was chaired by Janka Medová.

The MEDA3 conference was attended by more than 60 participants from different European countries: Slovakia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Great Britain, Faroe Islands, Hungary, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as from Israel, Qatar, Uruguay, USA, Mexico and China. All 38 papers and 8 posters published in the conference proceedings were presented in Nitra.
Invited lectures were given by Jana Trgalová from Haute école pédagogique in Lausanne, Switzerland and Annalisa Cusi from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. On Thursday morning, a hybrid plenary discussion was held. It was moderated by ERME board member Eirini Geraniou from University College London, UK. Panellists on Computational thinking and mathematics education: debating synergies and tensions were Ivan Kalaš from Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, Iveta Kohanová from Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway and Piers Saunders (online) from UCL London, UK. The final words in the panel went to Alison Clark-Wilson (online, UCL London), who summarised the contributions of the panellists and added her analysis of the state of the art.

The programme also included a discussion for PhD students and young researchers. The discussion was prepared by Paola Iannone together with PhD students Filip Moons (University of Antwerp, Belgium) and Katrin Klingbeil (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany). PhD students and young researchers were able to share their experiences, joys and sorrows. The discussion was followed by a conference dinner, an opportunity for informal discussions and networking, not only for young scientists.
Conference participants highly appreciated the quality of the invited lectures, the discussion panel and the papers in the sessions, as well as the proverbial Slovak hospitality and high professionalism of the organisers.
