International summer school on teaching STEM subjects with lecturers from UKF

The University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, runs an annual summer school for students, PhD students and researchers in a variety of fields. The Summer School in Mathematics Education is one of the most prestigious.
This year it was organised with the support of the Erasmus+ ICSE Academy project at the Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education from 21-25 August 2023 as a Summer school in STEM Education. The summer school was attended by 50 participants from all continents except Antartcia. They included future and practicing teachers for all levels of education, as well as teacher educators and didacticians of mathematics and science subjects.

On Tuesday, Janka Medová led a demonstration of a mathematical trail with the MathCityMap application. On Wednesday morning, Martin Cápay, Janka Medová and Sylvia van Borkulo from the Freudenthal Institute conducted a workshop on computational thinking, showing how to develop it without a computer, so called unplugged, while solving mathematical problems, working in the COLETTE environment (https://colette-project.eu/) and with the help of the BBC micro:bit.
On Thursday morning, Janka and Rogier Bos showed participants selected problems from the Mathematics B-Day competition (http://www.primas.ukf.sk/bday.html) and their potential for mathematical investigations and inquiry-based mathematics instruction. Friday belonged to the presentation of the work conducted by the summer school participants during the whole week.
